How to Request a Second Opinion

At Illinois CancerCare, we support and encourage patients who wish to seek a second opinion regarding their diagnosis or treatment plan. To help you navigate this process, please review the guidelines below.

Our Second Opinion Referral Policy

  • Illinois CancerCare provides second-opinion referrals only to National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Centers.
  • If you prefer to seek a second opinion from a cancer center that is not NCI-designated, you will need to obtain a referral from your Primary Care Provider (PCP).

What is an NCI-Designated Cancer Center?

NCI-Designated Cancer Centers represent some of the nation’s most respected institutions in cancer research, care, and treatment. These centers are recognized for scientific excellence and provide access to innovative therapies, clinical trials, and comprehensive cancer expertise.

Insurance Considerations

Some insurance companies contract with preferred provider networks at non-NCI-designated academic centers, which may require patients to seek care at the academic centers listed below. In these situations, the attending Illinois CancerCare Hematologist / Oncologist will provide guidance on which non-NCI academic center would best meet the patient’s clinical needs.
