Illinois CancerCare is proud to welcome Karen Bevers, RDN, LDN to the team as our new Oncology Dietitian!

Let’s get to know a little about Karen!

What is your background?
I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics. I then moved to Peoria to complete my dietetic internship at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Prior to starting this role, I worked as an inpatient clinical dietitian.

What do you enjoy about dietetics/nutrition in general?
I’m passionate about educating on simple diet changes that can make a big impact on overall health. As a dietitian, I get to combine my love for food and helping others.

Why did you choose to become an oncology dietitian?
I chose to work in oncology to help patients manage any symptoms they may be experiencing that impact their nutrition.

What are your hobbies/interests?
I’m an avid traveler – I have been to every continent except Antarctica! I also enjoy taking pilates/yoga classes, cooking, and attending concerts.

Do you have any advice for patients after a diagnosis?
A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and you may feel that many things are out of your control right now. Think of nutrition as a component of your treatment and take control of your disease by nourishing your body during this challenging time.
