What medical change has impacted the field of cancer the most since you began practicing medicine?
I would have to say targeted therapies/immunotherapies. Additionally, there is an expanding accumulation of evidence recognizing how lifestyle factors not only influence the development of chronic illnesses, including cancers, but how implementing lifestyle change optimizes health, survivorship care, and overall quality of life.
Why did you choose your field?
Before joining Illinois CancerCare, I practiced for 27 years in Emergency Medicine. I aspired to become an Emergency Medicine Physician on the basis that the specialty offered a large day-to-day variety of challenging medical cases, situations, and procedures. This area of medicine has allowed me to treat patients from all age groups and with a large spectrum of physical and mental disorders, in addition to providing emergent care. I additionally completed Internal Medicine training for the purpose of increasing my depth of knowledge regarding complex medical conditions and critical care.
Why did you choose Illinois CancerCare?
Cancer and hematologic conditions affect many families, including my own. My parents have been patients here and received excellent, compassionate care from both the staff and clinicians alike. Their care experience here literally inspired me to investigate career change. After 27 years my career has now transitioned to helping others with similar ailments.
