Desirae Linden, APN
Staff Education:
Mennonite College of Nursing at ISU
When did you join Illinois CancerCare?
November 2016 as a Nurse
Hobbies / Interests:
I love spending time with my husband and family – and I’m a dog mom! I love cooking (and eating), staying active, being outside and traveling… but also appreciate lazy evenings on the couch when life allows.
What medical change has impacted the field of cancer the most since you began practicing medicine?
The ongoing development of immunotherapy and targeted therapies is amazing. I’ve been seeing continued growth in the realm of personalized cancer treatment and have seen an increase in survival rates first-hand from these changes.
Why did you choose your field?
I had trouble finding my niche in nursing and thought I made the wrong decision choosing a career in nursing. Participating in an internship on the oncology unit changed that for me and I knew I was meant to be an oncology nurse. The long-term relationship and special bond that patients form with their oncology team is so special. Fighting cancer is a team approach that I’m proud to be part of; our patients are so strong and determined!
Do you have any advice to give patients after they have been diagnosed with cancer?
Try to have a positive attitude! While your attitude can’t change your diagnosis and we’re all allowed to grieve, having a good attitude can positively change the way you feel and affect your quality of life. I hope during this life-changing journey you will find ways to keep joy and have a sense of normalcy.
