What medical change has impacted the field of cancer the most since you began practicing medicine?
I am new to the field, but over the past couple of years, oncology has seen a shift toward more personalized, less invasive, and highly targeted treatments. New therapies are extending survival and improving quality of life of the patients.
Why did you choose your field?
I chose oncology because this field of medicine is constantly growing/changing, and I love to learn new things. I also find it amazing to be a part of such a strong patient population. My personal experiences with cancer have shown me how much courage and strength that is needed as well as the importance of compassionate care. I hope to bring compassion and hope to each patient's journey as well as make a meaningful impact in the lives of my patients and their families. I love that oncology gives me the opportunity to build lasting relationships with my patients as well as help them to navigate their healthcare journey.
Do you have any advice to give patients after they have been diagnosed with cancer?
First and foremost, take time to feel and process your emotions. It helps to have someone there with you to help remember the details as there will be a lot to take in! Your oncology team is there to help – ask us questions and write things down if needed. Accept help from your loved ones and remember that this is a journey. Consider joining support groups as this can help connect you with others going through similar treatments. There will be good days and bad days, but we are there to support you every step of the way!
